Is Wild Child Cacao Fairtrade?

'Hey Wild Child, is your cacao Fairtrade?'

Great question! Using ‘fair’ cacao beans for Wild Child Cacao is an obvious choice in the wicked industry of chocolate. Yet, our cacao is NOT connected to the organization ‘Fairtrade’ that most people refer to.

Fairtrade is an international organization that certifies various goods including cacao, working on making trade in developing countries ‘fairer’. We like to call our cacao ‘honest trade’ or ‘sustainable’ cacao, making a positive impact on both farmers and land.

Our certified organic cacao beans come from the farmers’ cooperation ÖkoCaribe in the Dominican Republic. This cooperation is connected to 165 farmers that are paid four times the market value for their beans.

They offer education on crucial topics like reforestation, organic fertilization and ‘soil’ management. They also support in private matters like illness, death and maintanance on their homes and streets.

Our awesome middleman  Crafting markets handles all the importing and shipping and we pick up big bags of 70kg ourselves in the harbor of Amsterdam city.

We believe in simple, direct trade with a transparent cost price. Last year Malou went to check out the cooperation and learn about their ways.

We are always learning and reflecting on this during our many cacao moments at the office: what are we doing? And… ‘are we doing the best we can?’
